Great Day Sprucing Up the Pocket Park

Wow, today was the perfect example of Community Spirit. We had 18 volunteers show up prior to the 9 a.m. start time with their garden tools in hand waiting to do the annual spring cleaning of the Pocket Park. Before I mention all the organizations involved I have to talk about several outstanding individuals that participated this morning. The youngest helper was two and the oldest in the group was 78. Sophia the 2 year old had a cast on her foot recovering from a broken foot. Another individual just had back surgery and another volunteer just had cancer surgery yesterday. Another South Side Civic Association volunteer who couldn’t make it today due to his work schedule, went to the Pocket Park on Sunday and trimmed all the ornamental grass. Sophia’s mother who was a very active participant is also 8 months pregnant. Talk about an amazing group of community volunteers.
The sun was shining bright and by 10:35 a.m. the Pocket Park was looking great after about 30 man hours of non-stop work. The weeds were pulled, bushes trimmed, pansies were planted and the daffodils were blooming. All the plants were treated with organic and safe fertilizer, a fresh coat of mulch in the flower beds, stone dust on the walk ways and a good watering and the Pocket Park jumped back to life.
As usual, a big Thank You goes out to Greg Rounseville and his outstanding crew at DPW. They had the mulch and stone dust waiting for us on schedule and then picked up the 12 bags of trash we collected. Pat Sakellis representing 3 different organizations was the organizer, team leader and supplier of supplies. We had volunteers from the Dennis Port Revitalization Committee, South Side Civic Association, Village Garden Club, Dennis Port Merchants Association, Dennis Historical Society, Pine Acres Beach Improvement Association ,Martha Murray Real Estate and just a good friend from Harwich and several residents. Another Thank You to Buckie’s who supplied free coffee to all the volunteers and water for the flowers and bushes. It was great time with great people who all just volunteered to make our little Pocket Park the place it was envisioned to be.  Thank You to everyone who participated this morning and enjoy the slideshow below the second picture. Give it a few seconds to load up.
