Sad Commentary

As a veteran and retired police officer I’m very sad and embarrassed that the flags of the Town of Dennis ( an All American Town ) have not been lowered to half staff as ordered by the President last Friday ( 4 days ago ) in honor of the 5 police officers killed in the line of duty in Dallas. Several phone calls have been made to appropriate officials and as of 1:15 p.m. today I’m dismayed that the flag at West Dennis Beach is still at full staff. DPW has the only key to unlock the pulley system.
Businesses, banks and residential flags do not have to comply with the proclamation, but my own personal feeling is if you are going to fly the flag, then do it properly. There are several prominent businesses in Dennis Port with 25 and 30 foot flag poles and all their flags are also at full staff. I also understand that lowering the flag on all residential flags is not possible because of obstructions, trees, wires etc.
It appears that there is no one assigned to lower and raise town flags after proclamations from the President or Governor. Hopefully this will be addressed in the very near future. The Fire Dept. is usually on top of this as well as the Police Dept. It’s the flags at the library’s, parks and rotaries that fall into the abyss.
Some people just don’t care anymore….and it’s a very sad commentary on our way of life today. Just my own personal feelings and does not reflect the feelings of the Dennis Port Revitalization Committee.
